We are thrilled to be back with our beloved AFCM once again and tonight we make the important introductions to our crack team of AFCM musicians! The Goldner String Quartet's AFCM swansong begins with the gorgeous Schumann String Quartet Op.41 No.3. Introducing our three pianists we will hear some Percy Grainger, harking back to the old (or some would say odd) country with an old English Folk Song for three pianists. Gearchange into Hellfire by Mark Holdsworth, which is sure to make our resident winds count for dear life! We finish with an incredible arrangement of Ravel’s String Quartet for all the festival strings making that beautiful work come to life on a symphonic scale.

Tonight we witness the light and the dark battle for supremacy on the AFCM stage in a wickedly wonderful concert sure to prick the thumbs. Timothy Constable will begin our concert by warning off the evil spirits with his piece, Last Shaman. Following on from that we will hear Tansman's La Danse de la Sorcière and Brett Dean's infamous Voices of Angels. Our incredible baritone, Roderick Williams is known in the business as one of the true gentlemen, but we all know that there is usually a dark side hidden in the depths of even the most beautiful creatures. Here he makes a pact with the devil in a magical selection from Berlioz's Faust. To finish two of our pianists dance TO THE DEATH with Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. The audience has a good chance of walking out of this one unscathed, but the musicians on the other hand...

An evening of musical joy and intrigue, beginning with the seldom heard Grand Septet by Franz Berwald - undoubtedly influenced by the Beethoven Septet heard earlier in the day, this is a work of great humour and elegance.  Our resident musical expert Stephen Johnson enthralled us last year with his wonderful duo for clarinet and oboe, and once again he has written something specially for us in his slightly unsettling Unquiet Sleepers, an exciting World Premiere performance. Xenakis' Psappha is an exciting solo percussion piece dedicated to the Greek Poet of the same name. Her sensuous writing was famous for its early descriptions in the first person of love and sensuality.  We finish this wide-ranging programme with Franck's Piano Quintet, of which the Goldner Quartet and Piers Lane have delighted in performing together for many years.

About AFCM Evening Concerts: The jewel in the crown each day of the Festival are these full-length concerts presenting a wonderful range of repertoire, from classic favourites to lesser-known works and exciting new commissions.

In this humanistic ode to nature, French cellist Christian-Pierre La Marca presents a packed programme on the theme of saving the planet. Wonderful World is a project of multiple inputs, all converging on La Marca’s awareness of the need to save our planet. As he explains, “music has the ability to awaken consciences, to make people more sensitive, without trying to convince or mobilize them. Music is a short circuit that goes straight to the heart”. He is joined by AYO Momentum Ensemble, and it features incredible imagery from Yann Arthus-Bertrand.

Stephen Johnson will talk about Schoenberg's tone poem, Verklarte Nachte (Transfigured Night). This was Schoenberg's first masterpiece and is an early, still-tonal, work of his, steeped in opulent Wagnerian late romanticism. The term tonal is however stretched to the limit, so much so that at the time, one of its chords was deemed "non existent" by the Vienna Music Society leading to its rejection by them. Little did they know what they were missing!

Purcell's The Fairy Queen is loosely based on Shakespeare Midsummer Night's Dream and was composed three years before the composer's early death at only 35 years old. The score was only rediscovered early in the 20th century and will be championed here by Donald Nicolson, Lotte Betts-Dean, and the young virtuosos from AYO Momentum.

Following last year’s triumphant performance of Mahler’s 4th Symphony, we will this time experience Mahler's epic First Symphony Titan, referred to at its conception as a "tone poem in symphonic form", here performed with 15 instruments!  This evening’s performance will be concluded by a very special performance of Schoenberg's incredible tone poem Verklärte Nacht or Transfigured Night, here performed in the near dark. This should be magical!

It's the melody that moves us in music, isn’t it? Form is surely more abstract. But what if the way music is shaped and contained is vital too? Stephen Johnson thinks it is, and he’ll try to show how it works on us in this illustrated talk.

The concert begins with Beethoven’s only song cycle, A die ferne Geliebte (To the far away beloved) [sung in Jeremy Sams’ expert English translation]. Roderick then provides the music for the beloved’s response, set to words by poet Rommi Smith. At last, Beethoven’s title character finally has the chance to give her side of the story in this world premiere of Roderick’s song cycle.

Here, not only do we bid farewell to our Festival for another year, but we also to the Goldner String Quartet for their final time at AFCM.  We begin the concert with a very special arrangement of Bach Concerto BWV 1053r for vibraphone and strings. This is followed, rather fittingly at this troubling time, by Ruth Schonthal's A Bird Flew Over Jerusalem in which she imagines a humanized bird flying over the city, listening aghast to the sound of the incomprehensible suffering humans inflict on each other down below.  To liven things up, this will be followed by a joyous Mendelssohn String Sinfonia, some beautiful Ibert for winds and to fittingly celebrate the Goldners, they will finish the festival with Tchaikovsky's truly breath-taking String Quartet No.1.
