Cairns Tourist Festival Cairns Festival was founded by the Cairns Regional Council on 26 May, 1962 with the highlight event being the grand opening of a new jetty on Green Island.  This was the same time that the first annual Cairns Tourist Festival was established. Regional Queensland's most significant and fastest-growing community event, Cairns Festival has come a long way since then.

This is a significant regional cultural event of not only world-class entertainment, fun and culinary delight, but also to pay homage honouring the Italian immigrants that left their homeland in search for a better life and future in Australia. Generations of Italians making Australia and Far North Queensland home and changing the face and future of the North Queensland Region in farming, business, and development.
