Vicky Zhang

Proudly supported by Cameron Williams

Vicky was born in Sydney and raised with a background of piano and ballet. She was inspired to learn cello at age 11 when she heard Ennio Morricone’s Ecstasy of Gold performed by Yo-Yo Ma on the afternoon radio whilst unpacking her school bag.

Vicky began cello with Patrick Murphy before continuing with Susan Blake throughout her high school years and onwards. She received a full scholarship throughout her participation in the Rising Stars Program at the Sydney Conservatorium. She has learnt from Georg Pedersen at the Sydney Conservatorium and completed her Bachelor of Music (Performance) under the tutelage of Umberto Clerici. In 2016 upon graduation, she was awarded the Billings Prize for Young Cellists by the University of Sydney. Vicky is deeply grateful to have been able to learn from all her teachers in Sydney and is very excited to be continuing studies with Howard Penny at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM).

Vicky is an extremely passionate chamber musician. She has been extensively involved in numerous ensemble programs both local and international, including the AYO in 2011. In 2015, she was selected to participate in the Estivo Chamber Music Summer School in Italy as a member of the Australis Quartet. She has also participated in intensive chamber programs and masterclasses in South America headed by Hans Jensen, Eduardo Vassallo and Richard Young of the Vermeer Quartet in 2017.

Vicky is inspired by music’s ability to draw individuals and communities together and how it can positively influence the public on a larger scale.
