Governor’s Gala – Fandango

About this event:

An entertaining program that covers a wide span of music in a short time. The lighter side of classical music is certainly touched on here, but there are shadows and depths in the de Falla and Dvořák which nonetheless uplift and make us smile through tears.

Ray Golding Sunset Series - Oh là là

About this event:

Poulenc’s violin sonata isn’t heard as often as it deserves. It has all of his usual piquancy, but is utterly moving as well. The last page is devastating: when the great French violinist Ginette Neveu was killed with her pianist brother in a plane crash, Poulenc altered the ending to reflect his devastation and the result is heart-breaking. His Sextet is a superbly wrought delight, all players stretched, every page effervescing with energy and wit. Bolling’s Suite adds jazz to the mix. This is one cool program!

Evening Series - Viennese Masterpieces

About this event:

Last year Roderick Williams and Andrew West presented Schubert’s Winterreise and the whole audience was blown away. Henk Neven and Orli Shaham this year present his Schone Mullerin, the earliest great song cycle, a masterpiece written when he was 26. Of course it’s about love – the whole cycle of unrequited love – from the initial heightened experience of falling head over heels, to jealousy and feelings of betrayal, and in the end, how to comes to terms with it all. For his final AFCM, Piers wanted to perform the Brahms Quintet with our Quartet-in-Residence, the Goldners, with whom he has performed and recorded more than any other Quartet. The Brahms is inarguably one of the greatest works of chamber music, deeply emotional and full of thrilling impact.

Evening Series - From Russia with Love

About this event:

Rachmaninoff’s first Trio may be short, but it’s passionate and touching and beautifully written for all three instruments. It’s only in a festival that you have the resources to compare two different Tchaikovskys in one program, particularly when one of them is writing for harp and woodwind quintet, the other for a string quartet! The latter offering has that glorious Andante Cantabile for a slow movement, often heard on its own. Rimsky’s Quintet is a romp from start to finish and Shostakovich’s Octet provides a two-movement ripsnorter high octane finish...
