Advanced Masterclass Program

The Advanced Winterschool is held in Townsville during the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, and is an unforgettable experience for emerging musicians. Students will gain access to some of the world's leading artists for lessons, masterclasses, mentoring and concerts. Advanced/tertiary level ensembles are invited to apply. A warm welcome in sunny seaside Townsville is assured, as are first-rate concert experiences and coaching at an expert level. Affordable, educational and potentially life changing.

Program includes:

  • Ten-day program from 26th July to 4th August
  • Private and public masterclasses with world leading musicians
  • Performances in front of Festival audiences including participation in the ‘Advanced Concert’
  • Networking opportunities with Festival Artists
  • Private ensemble coaching from the International Winterschool Director, Pavel Fischer
  • Free entry to all Festival concerts held at the Townsville Civic Theatre

INTRODUCING IN 2018 - DAILY GROUP SESSIONS FOR ADVANCED MASTERCLASS STUDENTS FEATURING THE FOLLOWING PRESENTERS:

Goldner String Quartet

Members of the Goldner String Quartet will share some insights into what it takes to be a successful quartet.

Julian Yu (Australia) - Composer-in-residence

Julian will present ‘Quotation and parody in composition, with examples from my recent "Cutetudes" piano album’.

Wu Tong (China) - Sheng

Wu Tong will introduce students to the Sheng and talk about his involvement with Yo Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble.

Jessica Duchen (UK) - Author / Narrator

Jessica will give a history of female composers.

Grace Clifford (Australia)

Grace will share an insight into her journey so far.

JP Jofre (Argentina) Bandonen

JP will give a brief History of Tango - Argentina and the bandoneon.

Pavel Fischer (Czech Republic)

Pavel will provide interactive session on improvisation and a session covering folk music.

Financial Support
Participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodation. There are a limited number of bursaries available to support successful applicants with their costs. These will be assessed by the Winterschool Director, who will take into account a number of factors including such things as distance required to travel, size of group and experience. Billeting or hosted home stays may also be an option that the Festival can help arrange for students.

In readiness for your application, please prepare the following materials:

  • A 15 minute good-quality video recording featuring your ensemble performing two contrasting works. (Video needs to be provided via dropbox, youtube, vimeo, etc)
  • Agree on a list of repertoire that your group will have rehearsed to list in your application.
  • Ask for letters of recommendation from teachers and/or chamber music coaches now as these can take time to receive
  • Prepare an ensemble biography – tell us all about your group.
  • Collect all the relevant contact details for all ensemble members including the address details of the main contact person.
