8 Reasons to Visit Cairns in 2027

There are 8 great reasons to visit Cairns in 2027
One of them is the finest chamber music festival in the tropics — VOCES8, exclusively in Cairns. The other seven are why you won’t want it to be just a concert.
Hear Great. Leave Greater.
The music
Performances you can’t hear anywhere else
Each winter the world’s finest chamber musicians gather in one place, and in 2027 that includes VOCES8, exclusively in Cairns. Artists are mixed and matched into combinations that will never repeat, in rooms intimate enough to hear them breathe. This is the reason you come. The next seven are the reason you stay.

The reef
The Great Barrier Reef, between concerts
The reef and beautiful cays are a morning away. Ocean Spirit’s vessel runs from Cairns to Michaelmas Cay, a protected outer reef location where you can enjoy snorkelling in calm, shallow waters, use the semi-submarine or see the fish on a glass bottom boat tour - and be back in time for the evening’s performance.

The sand cay
Land on your own sand cay
Nautilus Aviation lifts off from the Cairns esplanade and sets you down on Vlasoff Cay — a sliver of white sand in the middle of the reef, yours for an hour with a picnic and nothing but the Coral Sea around you. From July, humpback whales pass below on the flight out.

The island
A rainforest island, 45 minutes away
Fitzroy Island — Koba to the Gunggandji people — rises straight from the sea as a national park, with coral you can snorkel off the beach and a summit walk that opens onto the ocean. Ferries run daily from the Cairns marina; a paddleboard and an afternoon make a complete day off.

The Tablelands
Waterfall country, an hour inland
Climb from the coast onto the Atherton Tablelands and the pastures turn green and the waterfalls begin — Millaa Millaa, Zillie and Ellinjaa strung along a single loop road. It’s the landscape the destination films are made of, and it’s closer than most visitors expect.

The oldest living culture
Country, shared by its Traditional Owners
A short boat ride across Trinity Inlet, the Mandingalbay Yidinji people share Country on their own terms — a Welcome, a smoking ceremony, and a walk through rainforest and wetland led by Traditional Owners. It’s 100% Indigenous-owned, and it sits at the heart of the festival’s First Nations storytelling.

The outback
The outback, by lunchtime
Thirty-five minutes by helicopter over the Daintree and the Tablelands — or a half-day 4WD — and the reef gives way to red earth and the sandstone escarpment of Mount Mulligan (Ngarrabullgan). Mt Mulligan Lodge holds just 28 guests: gold-rush history, and the quietest night you’ll have all year.

Winter in the tropics
Winter, but warm
While the south shivers, Cairns in July and August is dry, mild and clear — warm days, cool nights, no crowds, and a run of palm-lined beaches from Palm Cove up to Port Douglas. This is the season locals keep to themselves. The festival is your reason to find out why.
